What is llms.txt.
In short
A Markdown text file in the root of a website that briefly describes the business and points language models to its key pages. A 2024 proposal, not an official standard.
Where it comes from
The format was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI. The idea is simple: web pages are full of menus, scripts and ads, while language models work better with short, structured text. llms.txt gives them the key information in one place.
What it looks like
- An # heading with the name of the business or site (the only required element).
- A > line with a short description.
- Optional paragraphs with extra details.
- ## sections with link lists in the format [name](url): description.
- A ## Optional section with less important links that can be skipped.
Does it work?
It is a proposal, not a standard. Google does not use llms.txt in search, and the big AI companies have not publicly confirmed using it. It can be useful for developer tools and assistants pointed at documentation. It takes minutes to create, so it costs little, but do not expect miracles.
How to create one
Start with a list of services, key articles and company pages, each with a one-sentence description. Upload the file to the root so it is available at example.com/llms.txt. You can generate a draft with our free tool and then edit it by hand.
