Google adds more links to AI Overviews and AI Mode. What it means for your website.
On 15 October 2026 Google added more links, an official sites section and article carousels to AI Overviews and AI Mode. What it means for your site.
On 15 October 2026 Google announced on its blog a set of changes to AI Overviews and AI Mode. The common thread: more, and more visible, links to the websites AI draws on. What exactly changes, what is still unknown, and what does it mean for businesses that want to show up in AI results? Let’s go through it.
Five changes Google announced
- More inline links. Google describes “substantial increases” in links embedded directly in AI answer text, and says they will appear higher up more often.
- Official sites section. In tests, when only one or two official pages exist for a task, Google shows them in a dedicated section at the top of the answer, with context on why they are worth clicking.
- Article carousels. For timely topics, AI answers show a carousel of articles that highlights the user’s preferred sources. Google is expanding them to more locations and languages.
- Related articles with thumbnails. Links at the end of some answers get images and a more clickable design.
- Creator profiles in AI Mode. On some videos, the creator’s name links to their Google Search profile.
What we do not know yet
- Where it applies. Apart from article carousels, Google did not name countries or languages, so it is unclear when, or whether, every change reaches each market.
- Whether clicks will grow. Google shared no traffic data. Search Engine Land points out that claims about helping publishers are hard to verify today.
- How Google picks “official” pages. The announcement does not describe the criteria, only that it applies when very few such pages exist.
What it means for your business
The key takeaway is simple: only the sources AI actually uses will get links in AI answers. So it is worth doing three things:
- Write content that can be cited. Short, specific answers to customer questions, with numbers, steps and definitions. Inline links point to the passages AI used in its answer.
- Make sure Google knows which site is official. A consistent business name, organisation structured data, a Google Business Profile and directory listings that all point to the same website. This matters most for brands whose name is ambiguous or similar to others.
- Measure what happens. Check AI answers for your key questions regularly and watch traffic in GA4. I explain how step by step in how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business.
If you publish news or how-to content, it is also worth encouraging regular readers to add your site to their Preferred Sources in Google. According to Google, usage of the feature has grown sevenfold this year, and the new article carousels highlight exactly those sources.
