Local SEO
What is local SEO? How it works and who needs it.
What local SEO is, how it differs from regular SEO and who it is for. How local results and Google Maps work and how to measure results.
Search Google for “plumber near me” or “dentist Gdańsk” and above the regular results you see a map with three businesses. Which businesses appear there, and how high they rank in the results below the map, is the result of local SEO. What exactly is it, how does it differ from regular SEO, and who is it worth it for? Plain answers below.
Local SEO in one sentence
Local SEO is the work that makes a business visible in Google, Google Maps and increasingly in AI answers when customers search for services or products in its area. It covers searches with a city or district name and searches where Google itself decides the person wants something nearby, such as “pizza”, “mechanic” or “24-hour pharmacy”.
How it differs from regular SEO
The key difference: in local results it is not only your website that counts, but also your Google Business Profile, the listing in Maps. Google orders these results by three factors: relevance (does the business match the search), distance (how close it is to the searcher) and prominence (reviews, mentions, links).
What local SEO is made of
For a step-by-step guide to each element, see local SEO in Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot and how to rank your Google Business Profile.
Who benefits from local SEO
- Service businesses serving customers in their area: plumbers, electricians, renovation companies, car repair shops.
- Clinics and professional firms: doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, lawyers, accountants.
- Venues and physical shops: restaurants, cafés, hair salons, shops with a physical location.
- Regional B2B companies whose customers look for suppliers nearby.
Businesses that sell only online nationwide, where location does not matter, benefit less. For them general SEO matters more, and for stores e-commerce SEO.
Local SEO and AI answers
Questions like “can you recommend a good dentist in Gdynia?” are increasingly answered by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. They draw on the same sources as local results: profiles, reviews, directories and business websites. Consistent, complete information about your business increases the chance that AI names you. I cover this in the article on GEO.
How to measure results
- The Performance report in your Business Profile shows views, search terms, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
- GA4 with UTM parameters on your profile link shows profile traffic separately from regular results.
- Maps rankings are worth checking from several points in the city, because results depend on where the searcher is.
- Enquiries and sales are the ultimate measure: how many calls and forms come from Google.
