Google Ads and SEM
What is SEM (search engine marketing).
In short
Search Engine Marketing, all marketing in search engines. In everyday use it usually means paid search campaigns such as Google Ads, although the broader definition also covers SEO.
Also known as: Search Engine Marketing
Two definitions
In the broad sense, SEM (Search Engine Marketing) covers all marketing in search engines, SEO and ads together. In everyday use, including job ads, SEM usually means paid campaigns, mainly in Google Ads. It is worth checking which meaning someone has in mind.
SEM vs SEO
- Ads work as soon as they go live, SEO builds over months.
- With ads you pay for every click. Organic clicks are free, but the work on the site costs.
- Ads stop when the budget runs out. SEO results last longer, although they need maintenance.
When to combine them
Ads complement SEO well at the start, when a site has no rankings yet, for seasonal campaigns and for queries that are hard to win organically. Campaign data, such as which queries drive sales, later helps with content planning. In turn, a strong landing page built with SEO in mind improves Quality Score and lowers cost per click.
